Vienna Shorts: Take Two
(on variations in black and white – on the city as a deconstruction site)
b/w was commissioned by the Indiana University Moving Image Archive to celebrate the centenary of the 16mm film format. Shot on a single roll of film and edited in-camera, it employs close-focus cinematography of text from commercial house paint samples, suggesting a mythology of light and shadow. still/here was made as a thesis film at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. A meditation on the vast landscape of ruins that constitute the north side of St. Louis—an area populated almost exclusively by working-class African Americans—the film was recently restored on 16mm by Mark Toscano at the Academy Film Archive.
