Vampyr
A young student with a penchant for the supernatural is confronted with mysterious occurrences in a small French town. Strange figures, mysterious shadows, a strange murder, a young woman with an inexplicable illness - is she becoming a vampire? For his first sound film, Carl Theodor Dreyer once again completely redesigns the idea of what cinema can (be): as a scene of the supernatural immersed in gray-white veils. Using sparing means, he creates an oppressive sensation of menace, culminating in the unforgettable scene when the main character sees himself trapped in a coffin at his own funeral. A subtle masterpiece of cinema as a (nightmarish) dreamlike experience. (C.H.)
