Georgia at the end of the 1930s, during the Great Terror: a girl escapes from the orphanage to her parents' home. Her father has been shot as an enemy of the people, her mother deported as the wife of one. ‘A Chekist has made himself at home. In the parallel story, the mother writes letters to her daughter from prison and is forced to march in the ice with other women. The focus of Gogoberidze's analysis of totalitarianism is the girl's encounter with the secret policeman, which oscillates between attraction and repulsion. The mother's off-screen voice is dedicated to survival - dance, music and the community of interned women resist the violence of the system. In 1992, with The Waltz on the Pechora, Gogoberidze was finally able to make the film that, in her own words, she always wanted and needed to make. It is based on her mother's documentary accounts of camp life and Gogoberidze's own childhood memories. (G.B./B.W.)
