No topic occupies Germans as intensely as that of German identity. For a year, Troller examined the state of German sensibilities in cities and villages, at Carnival and at Oktoberfest. He encounters workers, artists, and members of high society, takes part in an ecumenical animal mass, speaks with chimney sweeps, prostitutes, reckless drivers, homeless people, dueling fraternity students, neo-Nazis—always ready to ask the uncomfortable questions as well.
