Ujmuri is one of the first Soviet feature films directed by a woman. Defined by expressive contrast montages, striking visual compositions, and compelling characters, the story explores the collision of tradition and modernity, focusing on the draining of swamps in the Samegrelo region. Local folklore clashes with Soviet modernization. The film’s title refers to a goddess who, according to legend, resides in the swamps and resists intruders. Banned after its premiere, Ujmuri abruptly ended Nutsa Gogoberidze’s directing career.
Another natural force—a glacier over 4000 meters high—gave its name to Gogoberidze’s first solo directorial work: Buba, a 1930 “cultural film.” The hopeful vision of a mechanized future is contrasted with the harsh reality of life and labor in the mountainous Racha region. Amid the portrayal of existential hardship and ideological framing, the film is notably infused with humor.
