To Kill A Mongolian Horse
Saina's father never taught him to ride, but simply put him on the back of a horse and left the rest to him. Saina tells this to his friends - and finally, accusingly, to his father too: a kind of antidote to too much nostalgia in the face of the rapid changes that have taken hold of Inner Mongolia, his homeland. Livestock farming is no longer profitable, everyone goes to the city and sells their land to corporations that are interested in exploiting the natural resources. Saina earns his living with acrobatic performances at horse shows that stage the legendary life of Mongolian horsemen for tourists and tries to support his son with the little money he has and pay off his father's gambling debts. But his heart lives in the steppe, with his sheep and horses. What to do now, when the fathers' generation did nothing to secure rights and give their children the tools to defy exploitation?
