To Close Your Eyes and See Fire
On 4 August 2020, a huge explosion occurs in the port of the Lebanese capital Beirut, killing over 200 people immediately and causing extensive damage. For many, the catastrophe is no coincidence, but symptomatic of a corrupt political system that has been leading the country ever closer to the abyss for a long time. The directing duo Nicola von Leffern and Jakob Carl Sauer accompany a handful of survivors and their families on their journey into a new life full of old uncertainties and scars that have remained with them. By meeting their protagonists in the midst of destruction with an open mind and at eye level, they succeed in making a gentle, respectful and extremely tender film.
