To Be Or Not To Be
Warsaw, autumn 1939: While an acting troupe, including a married couple with a snide rivalry (he: vain but untalented, she: glamorous but unfaithful) are rehearsing an anti-Nazi play, the Nazis invade Poland. Although the play is immediately cancelled, the actors soon find themselves in new roles: to expose a German spy, they slip into the costumes of the aggressors without further ado. An ingenious game of confusion between theatre and reality takes its course, using reflections and ambiguities to get to grips with the criminals. While numerous exiles gather in front of Lubitsch's camera, the satire is not appreciated by everyone when it is released in view of the world situation. Today, it is undisputedly one of the top films of its genre. (Florian Widegger)
