They Live
A warm-hearted yet subversive contribution to the era of Reaganomics and yuppie culture: Genre giant John Carpenter combines favourite motifs from B-movie archives – horror plus science fiction plus action plus comedy – and takes subversive pleasure in turning the prototypical paranoia of anti-communist 1950s films about alien invaders on its head. Construction worker Nada (enchanting blue-collar punch, not only in an epic duel scene: wrestler Roddy Piper) discovers how the social elite is robbing Americans of their free will and, incidentally, widening the economic gap. Thanks to special sunglasses, he can read the true messages sent out by advertising and the media: OBEY, CONSUME, CONFORM or MARRY AND REPRODUCE. A lone warrior's cinema against the creed of greed.
