They Drive By Night
Two brothers, two women and a fateful promise of advancement. That is the simple basic formula on which Raoul Walsh's gangster film on the highways is based. Joe and Paul drive restlessly across the country in their trucks. While one has had enough of the drudgery, the other dreams of the American dream of independence. After an accident, this soon turns into a nightmare – at the latest when Ida Lupino enters the scene. With oppressive harshness and cool calculation, she shifts the drama from a study of the milieu to the psychological, becoming a projection screen for destructive obsessions – a femme fatale avant la lettre. Lukas Förster: ‘With the force of a twelve-tonne truck, her ice-cold, psychopathic killer stare can take on anything.’
