Thelma & Louise

FromRidley Scott

WithSusan Sarandon, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel u.a.

Year1991

Duration130min.

Thelma (Geena Davis) and Louise (Susan Sarandon) are trapped in their respective existences—Thelma in a repressive marriage, Louise in a monotonous, dead-end job. Their planned weekend getaway quickly turns into a flight from the law after a fateful incident escalates in a roadhouse parking lot. Their journey through the endless expanses of the desert becomes an existential escape.

When the concept of THELMA & LOUISE was still germinating in the imagination of screenwriter Callie Khouri in the late 1980s, the realization of a road movie with two women in the lead roles was a bold endeavor. However, the studio's first condition immediately cast doubt on the idea that a women's story would be told from a female perspective. The young author was not given the chance to direct her own material. Instead, producer Ridley Scott took on the role of director. But one is almost willing to overlook this oversight, as the director, in close collaboration with Khouri, succeeded in creating an impressively empathetic realization of the material.
