The Wizard of Oz
An oft-quoted ur-text of American cinema: a myth of self-discovery, a Technicolor frenzy, a horror trip (apart from the official credits) distorted to the point of dream factory recognisability by several directors and even more screenwriters, in other words: a fairy tale. Judy Garland is catapulted by a whirlwind from the sepia-brown peace of rural Kansas into the wonderland of Oz, where she finds new, fearful friends, evil and good witches, the equally cute and gruesome Munchkins and many other oddities. Accompanied by a scarecrow, a lion and a tin man, she sets off to make her pleas to the mighty Wizard of Oz. But his reputation, like the Hollywood spectacle itself, is merely the result of word of mouth and the machinery of illusion - you have to find happiness yourself, somewhere over the rainbow.
