THE WILD BUNCH is set in 1913, on the threshold of modernity, and tells the story of an ageing outlaw gang led by Pike Bishop who plan one last big coup in a rapidly changing world. However, the robbery of a railway company's cash register in Texas fails bloodily and the gang flees to Mexico, pursued by bounty hunters led by Deke Thornton, Pike's former friend and companion.

In Mexico, they come into conflict with the brutal General Mapache. After a failed arms deal and the murder of their companion Angel, the gang decides on a last desperate attack on Mapache's camp, which ends in a bloody showdown - and with Deke Thornton standing before the ruins of the old world...
