The Way We Were
Part of the special series IN MEMORIAM ROBERT REDFORD
Katie Morosky: Your girl is lovely, Hubbell.
Late 1930s. College student Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand), a Jewish activist with sharp intellect and unwavering idealism, falls in love with Hubbell Gardiner (Robert Redford), the charming writer from a privileged background. Their relationship is passionate but doomed from the start – the differences in principles, background, and life choices are simply too great.
Redford plays Hubbell with understated elegance and an inner emptiness that gradually reveals itself. He is handsome, talented, but conflict-averse – a man who drifts while Katie burns and fights. Their love is real. But in the end, is that enough?
