The Trouble With Angels
After more than a decade working in the television studios of Los Angeles, which provided her with a steady income, experience in different genres and creative control, she returns to the cinema screen with a comedy. This humorous, gentle film about two rebellious convent schoolgirls who are kept in check by their mother superior reveals Lupino's keen sense of authority, female self-discovery and self-assertion: ‘A study of a young girl's sexual awakening, but this time among women alone’ (R. Scheib). Producer William Frye originally wanted Greta Garbo for the lead role and reportedly offered her a million dollars. She declined, and so the part went to Rosalind Russell – for a lower fee, of course.
