Jack (Hunter McCracken) grows up in the 1960s in the Midwest of the USA as the eldest of three brothers. On the surface, all seems well with the world. Everything goes its usual course, everyone has their place in society. Going to church on Sundays is as much a fixed ritual as eating meals together as a family. But little Jack can see the cracks in the façade. Like his mother (Jessica Chastain), he has the ability to see with his soul and thus develop love and empathy. His father (Brad Pitt), on the other hand, preaches to the child to fight relentlessly for his own interests. He wants to strengthen him for the ‘real, hostile life’. Jack is torn between his parents and their ideals. As he is confronted with illness, suffering and death in the course of his childhood, his idealised childhood world darkens and increasingly appears to him as an impenetrable labyrinth.
In the modern world, the adult Jack (Sean Penn) feels like a lost soul, constantly searching for the grand plan that remains unchangeable in the course of time and in which everyone has a fixed place. A profound event finally leads him to a wonderful realisation.
