The Shop Around The Corner
After visiting the sophisticated world of Parisian high society in NINOTCHKA, Lubitsch now turns his attention to the emotional turmoil in a down-to-earth Budapest leather goods shop and creates one of the most beautiful love stories ever told in cinema - and an absolute Christmas classic to boot. But first things first: Shortly before the festive season, new saleswoman Klara is supposed to make Matuschek's tills ring with her refreshing manner, but gets into a fight with top dog Alfred. However, while they bicker during the day, in their free time they write anonymous letters about each other without being recognised ... The ease with which Lubitsch balances his characters between despair and happiness, disappointment and fulfilment is still unrivalled today. (Florian Widegger)
