Texas in 1868: Civil War veteran Ethan Edwards (John Wayne) returns home from the war, intending to visit his brother Aaron and Aaron’s wife Martha, only to find them murdered. The only survivor is his niece Debbie (Natalie Wood), who has been abducted by a murderous Native American tribe. Driven by vengeance, Edwards sets off to rescue his niece. He’s reluctantly joined by his nephew Martin (Jeffrey Hunter), with whom the lone wolf Edwards is forced into an uneasy partnership. Their search for the infamous chief “Scar,” responsible for the raid, becomes a years-long odyssey across the vast American wilderness. Along the way, Edwards finds something unexpected: his own humanity.
