The Revenge of Frankenstein is the second film in Terence Fisher's Frankenstein cycle for the British Hammer Studio: a highlight in the history of horror films. At the beginning, Baron Victor Frankenstein (Peter Cushing) escapes execution for the misdeeds of his creature and builds a new life for himself as Dr. Stein in the small German town of Carlsberg. But an ambitious young colleague recognizes him and urges him to resume his experiments with artificial life. What remains particularly astonishing about Fisher's Frankenstein films is the multi-layered portrayal of the ambivalent protagonist, brilliantly embodied by Cushing: Here, his rational doctor runs a philanthropic clinic for the poor on the side, but his obsessive thirst for research inevitably leads to chaos. Michael Gwynne's moving portrayal of the monster and the use of color are also outstanding. We are showing a rare Technicolor copy. (C.H.)
