The Mysterious gaze of the Flamingo
In the dust-dry expanse of northern Chile, a scattered mining settlement balances between myth and fear. Eleven-year-old Lidia grows up as an orphan in a chosen family, her most important caregiver being Flamingo. When a mysterious illness spreads – supposedly transmitted by a single glance – the walls of her community close in, and mistrust and shame take hold. Through Lidia's perspective, we experience in LA MISTERIOSA MIRADA DEL FLAMENCO, a beguiling blend of western and melodrama, the heavy burden of superstition – and many unanswered questions. Diego Céspedes' debut tells a seemingly archaic story about the stigmatisation of AIDS in the 1980s and the dynamics of toxic relationships that bind Flamingo to his former lover, using powerful colours and captivating cinematography. But the desert landscape, fuelled by magical realism, also holds very different experiences in store! A bittersweet story that challenges, moves and celebrates queer love in all its power.
