The Match Factory Girl
Day after day, Iris stands in a noisy factory hall. Her only task is to make sure that the packets of matchboxes passing by on a conveyor belt are correctly labeled. At home, she has to hand over her meager wages to her mother and stepfather. When Iris spends her money on a pretty dress, she is beaten. No one pays attention to her when she goes out alone, no one asks her to dance. And the well-to-do man who does approach her promptly leaves her with a child. Rejected by her parents, left to fend for herself by her Prince Charming with a check for an abortion, she goes to the pharmacy and buys a packet of rat poison...
The drama of a violated creature turns into a murderous grotesque, the hopelessness giving birth to the blackest humor.
