The Lost People
After the Second World War, a group of British soldiers guard a theatre in Germany where displaced persons, refugees and former political prisoners are staying, trying to decide what to do next. Although united for years by the fight against fascism, old feuds between the groups begin to resurface. Jan (Richard Attenborough) and Lily (Mai Zetterling) represent a heartbreakingly romantic couple who stand for a new beginning and peaceful coexistence. Bridget Boland's play Cockpit (1948) was filmed by Bernard Knowles within a year due to its topicality. Muriel Box, until then a sought-after screenwriter, laid the foundation for her own career as a successful director with her extensive work on this film. (E.S.)
