The Librarians

From Kim A. Snyder

Year2025

Duration92min.

LanguageEnglish

THE LIBRARIANS sheds light on the alarming developments surrounding libraries and librarians in the United States in recent years. At the center is the strategy of extremely conservative forces to place unwanted books on banned lists, remove them from libraries, and restrict public access. This affects works from the canon of African American literature, LGBTIQ+ literature, and many texts considered historically critical or politically progressive.

These efforts are accompanied by intimidation, agitation against librarians in public hearings, and even dismissals. This development is no coincidence—it did not arise out of nowhere. Libraries and librarians have been deliberately targeted in order to give a culture war both visibility and immediate impact.

In her documentary, Snyder follows the fight of librarians against “book bans,” and for intellectual freedom, democratic values, and self-expression. The award-winning film was co-produced by Sarah Jessica Parker.
