The King of Comedy
Rupert Pupkin, an unrivalled, irritating nobody with the charm of a rasp and the wit of a meat grinder, has set his mind on becoming the ‘King of Comedy’. Nothing can slow down his frenetic gallop of mediocrity. When God Langford (Jerry Lewis in the role of the nation's talk show host, who has become grumpy from the trappings of success) refuses his request for a chance to get started in the media, Pupkin promptly kidnaps his idol. The path to success via the trampoline of sensation is paved. To make everything even more neurotic and intense, Scorsese is generous with his sympathy for his hero, who is hounded by furies: this is exactly how he made his film debut, without money and constantly rejected. A dirge for the US culture of summit storms and a devastating homage to its panting media stars – a Scorsese racing car racing forward and backward at full throttle. (H.T.)
