The Invasion
On February 24, 2022, Russia invades Ukraine—a day after which nothing is the same as before. Half a year later, work begins on THE INVASION, which in a sense marks not only Loznitsa’s return to his homeland, but also becomes a chronicle of a country in which the state of emergency has turned into normality. We witness a wedding, several funerals, school lessons held in bomb shelters, severely wounded soldiers finding their way back into life, and books in the language of the aggressor being destroyed.
The documentary method is the same as in his archive films, but here the material itself becomes memory. Multilayered, suffocating, yet never hopeless, Loznitsa pays tribute to the resilience of his fellow citizens.
