The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Dr Parnassus (Christopher Plummer), the director of a travelling theatre, has a dark secret. Thousands of years ago, he swapped the soul of his daughter Valentina (Lily Cole) with the devil. Now the devil has come for his prey. To save her, Parnassus must make one last bet: Whoever collects five souls first will win Valentina. Tony (Heath Ledger), a man who was saved from execution by Parnassus' troupe, agrees to help collect the souls in order to marry Valentina.

Terry Gilliam's surreal fantasy THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS, which jumps between time levels, was almost never completed: During filming, the lead actor Heath Ledger, an exceptional actor and friend of the director, died. After some initial hesitation, Gilliam decided to rewrite the script and cast the role of Tony with several actors - Jude Law, Colin Farrell and Johnny Depp - "because no single actor could replace Ledger". So Tony took on different guises when he passed through a magic mirror.
