Bitter nurse Martha Beck lives with her slightly senile mother in Mobile, Alabama. Through a Lonely Hearts Club correspondence, she meets New York Latino gigolo Ray Fernandez – and falls madly in love with the professional marriage swindler. The unlikely duo first gets rid of Martha's mother before beginning to lure, rob, and murder single women. A gruesomely beautiful solitaire of US cinema based on the true story of the “Lonely Hearts Killers”! Beck and Fernandez, who ended up on the electric chair as serial killers in 1951. Although it's actually material for exploitation films, opera composer Leonard Kastle imbues his only directorial work with a stark dignity and emotional depth – this is not a portrait of a monstrous killer couple, but of their unheard-of passion, their fatal drive for life in an overwhelmingly dreary black-and-white universe.
