The Holy Mountain, the hallucinatory masterpiece by Alejandro Jodorowsky, caused a sensation in the 1970s with its anarchic visual power. More than 50 years later, it still captivates with its opulent mysticism and psychedelic surrealism—soon to be shown here as well, newly restored in 4K.

Jodorowsky himself appears in The Holy Mountain as a white-robed alchemist, flanked by goats, guiding us on a trip through religious symbolism and ultimate absurdity. Among his disciples are a Christ-like thief—who has just escaped crucifixion at the hands of children—in search of gold, along with eight other representatives of greed and the lust for power, all ready for purification. The path to enlightenment, however, is a rocky one, lined with bizarre scenarios and grotesque encounters. Birds flutter out of gunshot wounds, costumed lizards reenact the Spanish conquest of Mexico, and excrement is transformed into gold. At the end of this pilgrimage awaits the Holy Mountain, along with the promise of eternal life.

The Holy Mountain enchants and disillusions at the same time; it unsettles, yet ultimately reconciles. A cinematic firework of cruelty and beauty combined—so visually overwhelming that it can at times leave the captivated viewer dizzy.
