Korea in the 1930s. The beautiful but aloof Lady Hideko lives with her domineering uncle Kouzuki and her inherited fortune in a remote estate, the centerpiece of which is a devotedly maintained and guarded library. Kouzuki collects and sells books full of relentless eroticism, which Hideko must read aloud to wealthy gentlemen in order to drive up the price of the books. One day, a new maid, the young and naive Sookee, arrives at Lady Hideko's house. But the girl has a secret: Sookee is a pickpocket and con artist, hired to play Hideko into the hands of the cunning Count Fujiwara, who wants to rob her of her fortune after the wedding. But something unexpected develops between the two young women: a desire all their own, an unexpected affection that redraws the cards of power.

THE HANDMAIDEN combines the dynamic elements of the novel with Park's unique vision and creative power to create an unforgettable cinematic experience.
