The Fog
The small Californian coastal town of Bodega Bay is preparing to celebrate its birthday when it is haunted by the ghosts of the past. A ship was once lured to its doom in order to obtain gold for the town's foundation, and a hundred years later, the vengeful victims of that time return amid a mysterious fog. There is no need to mention the subversive political dimension of the subject matter of The Fog (shortly after the bicentennial of the United States) – Carpenter does not do so either. Instead, he and his favourite cinematographer Dean Cundey create an atmospherically overwhelming horror film that revives classic qualities. The film begins with a Poe quote and a wonderfully presented campfire horror story, then the superb ensemble of actors is confronted with horror in scenes of increasing suspense, which confidently transfers the subtle threat of Val Lewton's RKO horror classics to the shock cinema of the 1980s.
