Twelve-year-old Regan transforms almost overnight into a terrifying being, as malevolent forces seem to have taken possession of her. When conventional medicine reaches its limits, her desperate mother turns to the Church. Two Jesuit priests take on the case and attempt to drive out the demon using “the power of Christ”…

Upon its release, William Friedkin’s The Exorcist caused fainting spells, sparked endless discussion, and even led to a surge in church attendance. No surprise, as the film encapsulated many of the fears gripping Western societies in the early 1970s—fears rooted in a growing doubt about their own moral superiority. Freud once wrote: “Demons are our evil, discarded wishes, the offspring of rejected and repressed impulses.” (Florian Widegger)
