With his low-budget debut, Sam Raimi established a true cult film that, together with Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR and Don Coscarelli's PHANTASM, represents a counterpart to the generic slasher franchises of its time, rooted in both fantasy and comedy.
It's hard to imagine how you'd ever find such a place without a smartphone. But after a few near misses, a small group of party people make it to the remote vacation home in the forest in 1981. A hanging swing that moves on its own, pendulum clocks that suddenly stop and a poster of Wes Craven's THE HILLS HAVE EYES could have been interpreted as warnings. But when an old book and a tape activate the demons in the forest, it is already too late to turn back. Ultimately, there is only one thing to do: Dismember, dismember, dismember.
