The Dog Thief
Thirteen-year-old Martín is an orphan who works as a shoeshiner on the streets of La Paz every day after school. Because of this, he is mocked by his classmates. One of his best customers is Señor Novoa, a wealthy but lonely tailor. Together with a friend, Martín comes up with a plan to kidnap the tailor’s beloved German Shepherd and demand ransom anonymously. He hides the dog with the elderly housekeeper, Doña Gladys, who is like a mother to him. As they search together for the missing dog, what begins as a seemingly chance encounter between Martín and the tailor gradually develops into a deeper and more complex relationship.
This moving social drama by Chilean director Vinko Tomičić sheds light on the darker sides of La Paz in quiet tones and strikingly beautiful images by cinematographer Sergio Armstrong, addressing themes of racism, poverty, and the search for belonging. Non-professional actor Franklin Aro delivers a remarkable performance alongside renowned actor Alfredo Castro.
