A power struggle in the French town of Loudon. On one side Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu (Christopher Logue), on the other Grandier (Oliver Reed), a popular priest and ruler of the town who is coveted by many women and who, to make matters worse, is plagued by the "Black Death".
