The China Syndrome

FromJames Bridges

WithJane Fonda, Jack Lemmon, Michael Douglas, Scott Brady, James Hampton

Year1979

Duration122min.

LanguageEnglish

A TV reporter (Jane Fonda) and her cameraman (Michael Douglas) are filming a report on energy supply at a Californian nuclear power plant. When the plant is shaken as if by an earthquake, it is initially claimed to be a routine matter – in fact, it is a serious incident that almost causes a worst-case scenario. When the engineer (Jack Lemmon) examines the damage to his ‘life's work’, he discovers appalling inconsistencies. Released twelve days before the reactor accident at Three Mile Island, The China Syndrome became one of the great successes of Hollywood's liberal message cinema: Director James Bridges, who had already made a significant contribution to critical science fiction as the writer of Colossus, devoted himself entirely to straightforward, powerful suspense dramaturgy and character work with the actors – Jane Fonda and Jack Lemmon in particular were rarely so convincing.
