Arch Oboler is best remembered for Bwana Devil (1952), the first feature-length 3D sound film, which marked the beginning of the fascination with spatial cinema in the US in the 1950s. Unlike the rest of his fellow directors, Oboler believed firmly in the format and continued to experiment with 3D even when hardly anyone else was interested in it anymore. One result of this is The Bubble, one of the more brooding attempts at spatial cinema. While searching for a hospital, a couple ends up in a strange small town whose inhabitants go about their days as if in a trance. They soon discover that aliens control the town and have isolated it from the rest of the world with a transparent dome... A political parable of totalitarianism that can be reinterpreted again and again, but also works well as an allegory about the peculiarities of 3D cinema! (Olaf Möller)
