The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez
In Texas in 1901, language barriers, racist resentment, and nervous trigger fingers lead to Sheriff Morris being shot in self-defense by Gregorio Cortez, a man of Mexican descent. After 13 days on the run, Cortez is finally captured—but by then he has already become a political figure: a folk hero of the borderlands for Chicanos, and a criminal for the Gringos. (Listen to the Mexican folk music classic “Corrido de Gregorio Cortez”!)
A great, underrated western. The fear in Olmos’s hunted face, his tender bond with his horse—images that linger.
