The Act of Killing
A stirring document of a forgotten genocide - directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, produced by Werner Herzog and Errol Morris. Between 500,000 and 2,000,000 people fell victim to state-sanctioned death squads in Indonesia between the mid-1960s. An almost unbelievable crime against humanity, for which perpetrators such as the killers around Anwar Congo, portrayed here, still boast today. By retelling and even re-enacting their deeds, director Oppenheimer attempts to make the perpetrators at least begin to reflect on their gruesome deeds. In a climate in which even state television still celebrates the murderers, this is a seemingly hopeless endeavor.
