That Afternoon

An incisive and perceptive feature film debut by Iranian-born screenwriter, director and poet Nafiss Nia. This sensitive film experience deals with themes and problems that are closely linked to the filmmaker's own biography and innermost feelings. The film essentially consists of a trilingual conversation between a woman and a man on either side of a closed door: Roya (played by Hoda Niku) is confronted with her deportation back to Iran; the identity of her interlocutor (played by Alin Wishka) is less clear. "What makes this simple but effective concept a bit more cinematic are the different camera angles that occasionally observe the characters, sometimes even shadowing them," said critic Lisa Van Der Weel for Filmtotaal magazine: "A film that is only 75 minutes long and deals with very big themes."
