Tetes brulees
The title Têtes brûlées (“Burning Heads”) is taken from a rap song by the French duo Lunatic from the early 2000s. The film tells the tender and deeply moving story of a pre-adolescent girl in Brussels who, through grief and loss, is forced into a hard-won new maturity. When football fan and rap lover Eya (Safa Gharbaoui) loses her beloved older brother Younès (Mehdi Bouziane) in a tragic accident, she copes with her sorrow through the mourning traditions of her Tunisian immigrant community.
Based on the personal experiences of writer and director Yde Zellama—who lost her own brother at a similarly young age—the film won the Audience Award at Belgium’s leading film festival, the Ghent International Film Festival. (NY)
