Tchindas
Original language Cape Verdean
TCHINDAS takes us to the sun-drenched island of São Vicente, Cape Verde, where carnival is celebrated not only as a festival, but also as an expression of identity and resistance. At the centre of this stunningly vibrant documentary is Tchinda Andrade, a charismatic and respected trans woman whose strength and creativity unite her community. Since coming out in 1998, Tchinda's name has become synonymous with queer pride on the island. Her struggle for greater visibility for queer Cape Verdeans is only touched upon, but it is palpable in every encounter with Tchinda and her friends. We accompany the protagonists in their everyday lives as they prepare for carnival – sewing costumes, cooking, building floats and spending time together. TCHINDAS dispenses with interviews or explanatory commentary, instead letting gestures, glances and shared moments speak for themselves. Between drum rhythms and handmade glitter costumes, a portrait of queer joy and solidarity unfolds – full of warmth, humour and tenderness. ‘Tchinda rules, end of story!’
