Tanja – Diario de una guerrillera

In 1999, Dutch student Tanja Nijmeijer accepts an internship as a teacher in Bogotá and is confronted with the bloody civil war there. The politically committed student joins the FARC. She soon climbed into the inner circle of the guerrilla movement, worked as a translator, planted bombs and eventually had to go into hiding. In 2007, her secret diaries are found and published during a raid in the jungle. Tanja gains worldwide fame as a result. Years later, she plays an important role in the peace negotiations that end the armed conflict in Colombia. However, the former FARC fighter cannot let go of her past.

The award-winning German-Ecuadorian war journalist and documentary filmmaker Marcel Mettelsiefen paints a gripping film portrait of an ambivalent personality. He lets the now 46-year-old Tanja speak for herself. With the help of archive footage and interviews with Colombian journalists, he tries to find an answer to the question: Was she a freedom fighter or a terrorist?
