Taboo – Amos Guttman

FromShauly Melamed

Year2024

Duration76min.

During his lifetime, Amos Guttman remained a taboo figure for the notoriously conservative Israeli film establishment. As a Romanian immigrant, he never really found his place in his new homeland. As a gay artist, he made the first films on this subject nationwide. He was an artist who wanted to make films not for the masses, but for a small audience. On the other hand, he wanted to make films that connected with the rest of the world and not just Israel – works that Derek Jarman or Pedro Almodóvar might happen to see and feel understood by, and he painted even the most sacred moments in Israeli history in kitschy shades and hues. He was adventurous, but Guttman only made four feature films before he died of AIDS. TABOO consists of excerpts from his last interview.
