Swing Time
Alongside Top Hat, this is probably the best musical featuring the Astaire/Rogers duo: the former, the goofball who can work magic with his legs, plays a playful dandy during the Great Depression who jumps on a train to New York, where he soon encounters the latter in the form of a dance teacher who, although she has little to teach him in this field, soon sparks his affection. George Stevens, still years away from devoting himself entirely to the epic treatment of meaningful themes, arranges a nimble sequence of imaginative gags and stupendous song and dance numbers with the elegance of a master craftsman. This is literally about bluffing for dancing, about playing with luck – a whirlwind of virtuosity. (C.H.)
