Sugata Sanshirō (Judo-Saga)
This debut film strikes like an axe blow, splitting a tree to its roots without hesitation. Behold the essence of judo! Behold the exposed core of Japan, the essence of an incomparable interpretation of the world! The conflict between the ancient art of jiu-jitsu and the emerging school of judo at the end of the Meiji era at the beginning of the 20th century. After a night of confusion, the lotus flower blooms at dawn to reveal its sober and mystical wisdom to the protagonist: no thought, no hardship, pure heart. The image returns at the moment of greatest threat. During the battle on the windswept plateau, the sky transforms into a calm cloud and the cloud into the blossoming lotus flower. Only the ignorant can still translate the martial arts of Japan as ‘sport’ after watching this film. The name of the axe-wielder: Kurosawa Akira. (H.T.)
