London, 1912: Maud Watts, washerwoman, wife and mother, begins to campaign for women's suffrage after witnessing a suffragette campaign. In the fight against the government, the movement around Emmeline Pankhurst increasingly favours militant measures. Both Maud's employer and her partner are sceptical about her activities, and even the custody of her son is in danger. SUFFRAGETTE tells the tense story of the decisive years of feminist struggles in Great Britain that led to partial suffrage in 1918. Years of intensive research by Gavron and Morgan provided the basis for the screenplay. Archive footage of historic moments - Emily Davison's fatal Derby action - are also part of the film.
