Hannah Maynard, prosecutor at the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, is conducting a trial against Goran Duric, a former commander of the Yugoslav People's Army. He is accused of being responsible for the deportation and subsequent murder of Bosnian Muslim civilians in Kasmaj, a small town in what is now Republika Srpska.
When an important eyewitness contradicts himself in his testimony, the court sends a delegation to Bosnia to get a picture of the situation on the ground. Doubts about the witness's credibility are confirmed; it appears that he is not telling the truth. Shortly afterwards, his body is found; he has taken his own life in his hotel room.
Hannah does not give up on the case. Hoping to gain new insights, she travels to Sarajevo for the witness's funeral and meets his sister Mira there. Hannah soon gets the impression that the young woman has more to say about the defendant than she is initially willing to admit.
Although Mira is afraid to face the past and thus endanger her unsuspecting family, she finally provides the decisive clue to Duric's crimes and agrees to repeat her testimony before the tribunal in The Hague.
