Stschastje Mojo (My Joy)
In his feature film debut, Loznitsa continues the dark themes he previously explored in his documentaries. Stories picked up on long journeys through the Russian countryside form a mosaic of hardship, chance and uprooting. What begins as a road movie – truck driver Georgi drives through endless forests and deserted villages – soon breaks away from its linear form. Encounters suddenly shift to other times and realities; memories intrude into the present like foreign bodies. What seems clear dissolves in favour of a gloomy panorama – reinforced by Oleg Mutus' flickering, unsteady camera, everything seems to be thrown off balance. In the end, a body is left behind on an icy road, swallowed up by a night for which cinema can find no more images.
