Strnadovi (A Marriage Story)

FromHelena Třeštíková

Year2017

Duration102min.

New beginnings and confidence. Jana (20) and Vaclav (24), both studying architecture, smile excitedly at the camera in black and white pictures. Although they are still quite young, they are united by their desire to get married: "It won't be that bad," Jana estimates. Six months later, we hear the cries of their first child, Honza. Třeštíková films the everyday life of the little family. While Jana, despite her university degree, shares the fate of many young women and takes care of the family at home, Vaclav completes his military service and then makes a career as a furniture dealer. Jana compensates for her lack of a professional career with many hobbies, through which she lives out her creativity and craftsmanship. Vaclav, in turn, is happy that she can finally cook dumplings. Over the years, the film footage and the family (five children, then some grandchildren) grow, as do the problems, conflicts and crises. Almost imperceptibly, happiness falls by the wayside.
