Starman (1984)
An alien has accepted the Voyager probes' invitation to visit Earth, but instead of the peaceful mission he expected, his visit turns out to be dangerous: after his spaceship is shot down, he takes on human form – in the guise of an accident victim. The victim's confused widow becomes his companion on a journey across the United States to the designated meeting point with another spaceship. Hunted by government officials, the two grow closer as the alien experiences life on Earth with disarming naivety. An underrated film by John Carpenter, who was criticised for turning away from action and horror in favour of a romantic fantasy. In doing so, he created a wonderful variation on the genre in the humanist tradition. Jeff Bridges, as casual, skilful and daring as ever in his performance, becomes the reincarnation of the alien visitor from The Day the Earth Stood Still. (C.H.)
